Danube Cooperation Print E-mail

The Danube River Basin has been a unique cooperation space for decades for the peoples residing in it. The waters of the Danube and its tributaries have been a biding force for centuries. Some of these connections were formalised, deepened and further developed, while others remained of a limited nature, both in terms of scope and duration. In spite of these fluctuating interpretations, the Danube Region remains an area with its own identity and specifics. It is also one of the few areas in the world, where cooperation activities have developed so early and in such a sustained manner for long periods of time.

Changing circumstances within and outside the Danube region, today require further revision, strengthening and deepening of the already existing cooperation activities. Interdependence and interconnectivity of various modern times threats and problems require joint regional action by the Danube countries, as well as a sustained and closer cross-sectoral cooperation of all stakeholders and at all levels.

SECI supports the integration of Danube cooperation activities in close cooperation with all relevant regional entities, dealing with various aspects of development of the Danube region (visit the Who is Who section for an overview of the main Danube entities).
Special attention in this respect is offered to enhancement and deepening of the activities of the Danube Cooperation Process, as the overarching political forum of the countries from the Danube region. Efforts for a comprehensive and integrated approach towards the development of the Danube region have advanced with the decision of the Council of the EU to mandate the European Commission to elaborate an EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
